Mayte and her son, Edwin, make perfect business partners. She has a natural creative talent, and he excels with numbers. Together, they opened Mayte’s Sweets Patisserie and Café at 901 Broad St. in New Bern.

The bakery serves Italian coffee, cakes, cookies, macarons, tarts, custards, cheesecakes, cream puffs, Charlotte cakes, and a variety of other sweets, all made by Mayte. She earned her degree from the University of Hawaii and her Pastry Arts degree from the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts.

“Every two years we were moving, and as diplomats, we entertained a lot of people,” Mayte said. That is where her love of cooking and baking became an exceptional asset to her and her family.
“I worked at the New Bern Country Club as a pastry chef, then we moved. After that, I baked for fun. Baking was more of a hobby than a business.”
